Lighting

Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms
Leaving lights on in rooms you’re not using will add up on your bill. So, make it a habit to switch them off every time you leave a room.

Replace bulbs with LED alternatives
Not only do LED bulbs last much longer than standard bulbs, they also use significantly less energy, making them cheaper to run. There are various types with different wattage, colour and lifespans, so make sure to shop around to get the best value for money.

Heating

Seal up gaps and cracks
Small draughts mean big heat loss. Patching up gaps in insulation – around doors, windows, and walls – keeps warmth in and costs down. Basic draught proofers are available for as little as £3 from DIY shops.

Check for air in your boiler system
If your radiators have air trapped inside, they may have cold spots, and your boiler will have to work harder. Bleeding your radiators regularly is a sign there could be something wrong. Check your boiler pressure gauge and speak to a maintenance provider for advice.

Put your heating and hot water on a timer
Use the buttons or dial on your thermostat or control panel to set your boiler timer and check the timer plan to make sure you’re never heating an empty club.

Move large furniture items away from radiators
If you have storage or a sofa blocking a radiator, the heat is likely being absorbed into your furniture rather than the air. Move big items away by an inch or more to feel a difference.

Install radiator reflectors
Radiator reflectors or foil works by reflecting any heat that would otherwise be lost through your walls back into the room. You can find affordable sheets at high street DIY retailers. They’re most effective when placed behind radiators on external walls.

Catering/bar

Don’t overfill the kettle
Boiling more water than you need? That’s energy (and money) down the drain. Only fill kettles and urns for what you’re using. You could even use your energy monitor to measure how much your kettle costs to run and change the price of your hot drinks to match.

Check your fridge and freezer temperatures
Make sure your fridges are set between 0-5°C and freezers around -18°C.* Too warm, and food and drinks won’t stay fresh. Too cold, and you’re wasting energy.

Defrost freezers and cold rooms regularly
Over time, ice builds up and makes your freezer and cold rooms work harder than needed. A regular defrost keeps everything running efficiently and cuts energy use.

Switch off drinks chiller
Fridges are among the most energy-hungry appliances in your club. They typically need to stay on all the time, so they’re continually using energy to maintain a constant temperature. To keep costs down, remember to turn your drinks fridge off when your bar is closed, or use a plug-in timer to run it when needed
